During the week of 1-11 we have been getting numerous reports of brown water in the Highland, Harvard, Elm and Belmont St. area. This brown water condition is being investigated by us but at this point we have no obvious reason for the problem. There are multiple factors that have contributed to the issue including a house fire on Crescent St., water main breaks on Spring and Harvard St. and a service leak on Prospect St. All these incidents may have an effect on the appearance of the water in the problem area. Another factor is a change in water flow through the mains and the low usage during the winter months. Low water flow means that it takes longer for the discoloration to clear. The water treatment plants have been fully operational and the water being pumped into the pipes is very clean. The discoloration you are seeing is not harmful and we test the water regularly, according to DEP regulations. We understand the appearance of the water may not be favorable and we understand residents' frustration with the lack of a better explanation. Please know that we continue to investigate the cause and possible solutions for this problem and will continue to do so until the water clears up.
